Indonesia is known as one of the largest cocoa producers in the world. In 2024, cocoa exports experienced a significant increase. What caused this increase? Are there any new strategies implemented by the government and industry players? Let’s dig deeper
Booming Cocoa Exports from Indonesia
According to the latest data, cocoa and its derivative products reached an astonishing export value of US$2.31 billion (around Rp36.96 trillion) from January to November 2024. This figure surged by 110.93% compared to the previous year! How did this happen?
Factors Driving the Cocoa Export Surge
- Skyrocketing International Prices
Global cocoa production has declined, especially in the two largest producing countries, Ghana and Ivory Coast. As a result, global cocoa prices have soared. By the end of 2024, cocoa prices hit US$10,556 per ton, an unprecedented high! - Increasing Demand from Major Countries
Countries like India, the United States, and China have become the main destinations for Indonesia’s cocoa exports. They are increasingly fond of high-quality cocoa raw materials and chocolate products from Indonesia. - Growing Popularity of Processed Cocoa Products
In addition to cocoa beans, exports of processed cocoa products such as chocolate and cocoa powder have also surged. Their export value reached US$2.62 billion (around Rp42.69 trillion), making Indonesia the world’s fourth-largest exporter of processed cocoa products!
Challenges in Indonesia’s Cocoa Industry
Although exports are rising, the domestic cocoa industry faces several challenges:
- Rising Raw Material Costs: With cocoa bean prices soaring, the domestic processing industry must strive to remain competitive.
- Dependence on Export Markets: Changes in import policies in destination countries could disrupt exports.
- Need for Improved Local Production: To stay competitive, Indonesia must boost cocoa production efficiency and quality.
With high demand and favorable prices, Indonesia’s cocoa exports are thriving. However, to sustain this growth, the industry must prepare for challenges and continue innovating.
